For Immediate Release:

Inspired by her profound love of animals, Amelia Scheffs-Bevington's

photographs take us to the heart of her passion. In her photos, we often find

ourselves face-to-face with a creature who seems as curious about us as we are

about him. At other times, her work allows us to share one of her subject's

more private moments. From quirky personifications to natural idiosyncrasies,

Amelia captures her animal friends with a child's eye and an "old soul."

In May of 2010, her first solo exhibition entitled "Amelia's Birds" opened at

Art at First Gallery – First Presbyterian Church in Manhattan. On display were

twenty-four limited edition photographs which Amelia took during the preceeding

winter in her hometown of Long Island City, NY. One viewer commented that "she

would never again look at a seagull the same way."

Amelia sits reserved and watchful. She is a girl of few words, but her

photographs speak eloquently. She says she wants to "hold on to the cuteness,

the curiosity, and the character." With compositions that display a surprising

and elegant balance of elements and detail, pattern and color, light and dark,

Amelia conveys the essence of her chosen subject.

Besides photography, Amelia enjoys drawing, reading, various art projects, and

visits to the local parks, zoos, and aquariums. In many ways, she is a typical

ten-year-old. In many other ways, her difficult life journey has set her

apart.

At the age of six, her diagnosis of Medulloblastoma, a rare and highly

malignant brain tumor, led her to undergo surgery, radiation, and numerous

chemotherapies. Her unshakeable determination and courage continue to help her

battle both the recurrent cancer and the side effects of the cure.

Amelia's personal fight has touched many. In 2009, a non-profit organization,

The Amelia Appeal, was formed with the goals of increasing awareness of

pediatric cancer and raising funds for families uniquely burdened by the care

of a child with cancer. For more about Amelia and The Amelia Appeal, please

This Autumn, "Amelia's Birds" will return home to Long Island City and a few of

them will be on display in her second solo show. Along with the birds, Amelia

will share a selection of other works including the first piece of her current

project, "Pooches and Their People." "Photos by Amelia", will open September

24th at Ten10Studios, 10-10 47th Road in Long Island City, NY.

(www.Ten10Studios.com). A reception for the artist will be held Friday,

September 24th, from 6 -10 pm. The exhibition continues Saturday, Sept. 25th

and Sunday, Sept. 26th from Noon until 6pm each day.
